I’m psyching myself to be brave … Here’s the NEWLY revised and amped Page 2 of ME AND HER: a Memoir of Madness …
‘Open up!’ demanded a deep voice. Two noses pressed up against the steamed up bathroom window.
‘I can’t. Not till I’m decent.’ I crept into the main room past my half-packed suitcase, the towel wrapped taut around me.
They might grab me and take me away. Then I ‘d never go home. I must stop them from coming in.
My mind raced with desperate plans. I rushed past the perfectly made bed and flung open the wardrobe, my fingers rifling through clothes sorted into sections with matching shoes underneath. Past purple, the colour of insight and imagination and jade green the colour of harmony and self-healing. Today I craved something stronger. Red ─ the colour of power and confidence.
I tugged on my cherry-red wool knit, black trousers with red pin stripes.Colour means everything! It can change my day!
My body froze behind the door, straining to listen. But too petrified to gaze through the peephole. My hand quivered as I unbolted the door. Slowly I turned the handle.
Oh no! Why the hell are they here?
Their uniforms, badges and guns, symbols of their power, screamed out at me. But I couldn’t fathom their names or their damn questions.
Someone brushed past. He yanked open the heavy curtains and the sliding door leading to the balcony. Glaring streams of light blinded me. The roar from the freeway rushed in, blaming me of terrible things.
Will they ever forgive me?

Writing is the best therapy….from my experience. It doesn’t look so harmless on paper….and most importantly, it has been removed from one’s very core.

Just letting you know I’ve read your 1st and 2nd pages of ‘Me and Her’……was hanging on every word…..even got goosebumps, which is unusual as I haven’t found too many riveting reads. I’m very impressed… I do hope that you will hear from a publisher very soon….!!!!!! 🙂

Karen, love it so far! Finding a publisher is extremely difficult and disheartening. Keep the faith on that one.
I think all of us bp’s have interesting bio’s to tell…but not all of us can write well (some are artistic, some musical, etc.). My mom (back in the day, everyone (including her) knew she was mentally ill, but no one knew with what..if she had been hospitalized then she would’ve suffered thru gruesome treatment and remained locked up forever) was extremely talented in the music realm..she played castinettes, piano (could play Heart and Soul all by herself), danced very well, sang, etc. My paternal great-grandmother probably was bp and she died in an institution back in the 1930’s (suicide? no one knows); she was only in her 50’s. My only sibling is an extremely dangerous bp, undiagnosed and untreated (thinks nothing is wrong). She’s five years younger than I am and on her 5th marriage, for example, extremely hypersexual, among other things. The wreckage of her life is sad indeed. Her son, my 30-someting nephew, is another undiagnosed and untreated bp…he and his mother DESPISE one another. He has 2 kids with 2 different women and he’s forbidden to see both by the moms. He’s a substance abuser & done jail time. So sad!
My illness, bp Type 2, has helped me recognize it in others. I researched my family back to my great-grandmother and that’s as far as I needed to go.
Keep writing, Karen! I want to read the whole book!

Wow, when I read the preview of your writing/manuscript, it made me (as the reader) as if I was there, being scared as well. Is this a novel or a true story? By the way, I should learn more from you, Karen about how to put some deep emotion inside this writing…

This is my true story, part one of my journey into Mental Illness and later out through the other side to Recovery.
When I write an emotional scene I concentrate on reliving that moment … my emotive thoughts and body language. Short sharp sentences add tension.
Ah, u big tease!! Taunting us one page at a time is almost unbearable. Fantastically written from first to last sentence. I’m with the others – hurry up & get it published so we can sit down & read the whole thing! Looking forward to it muchly 🙂 Josie
