Here’s a snippet from my latest blog…

‘My name’s Karen Tyrrell: survivor of parent-teacher abuse, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. I created Me and Him: A Guide to Recovery , two books in one…

Part 1: 30 chapters sharing pro-active steps to maintain daily happiness by stressing less, sleeping better, overcoming anxiety, beating depression. AND how to develop your own personal wellness plan.

Part 2: is dramatic memoir revealing shocking disclosures from Steve, the carer’s perspective.

What secrets did Steve finally divulge six years on?

What impact did those revelations have on my marriage AND recovery?

I became manic and psychotic, escaping to a lonely motel. Police discovered me, incarcerating me into a frightening psychiatric ward.

I’m celebrating the life of my dearest Mum, Gloria June Cox: survivor, battler and giver of self-less LOVE.

When I became mentally ill, she sat with me, NEVER leaving my side.

Sick as I was, I felt her LOVE.
Gloria overcame many obstacles in her life: rheumatic fever as a baby, injuries from a childhood taxi accident, two heart operations and colon cancer. In 1998, Gloria survived a traumatic car accident in Mackay.

Gloria embraced life, showing a zest for whatever she did.

She loved to cook, sew, listen to music and care for her family. Between 1975-81, Gloria worked at Burwood Post Office sorting mail and as a cleansing technician.

Mum traveled the globe, exploring USA, Europe, Asia and UK. Her highlight was cruising on the QE2 liner from New York to London.

Gloria June Cox will be remembered as the beloved wife to Aubrey, adored mother to me: Karen, and to my sisters Marilyn, Cherie and Debbie.

Aaron, Alana, Laurinda, Scott, Shaun, Ryan and Melissa treasured Gloria as their grandmother. Tasmin, Joshua, Alex and Audrey cherished her as their great-grandmother.

Last week, Mum sadly passed away in her sleep at Fairfield hospital, Sydney.

Mum showed her inner strength, as a survivor to the very end. Gloria will be remembered as the HEART of the family, the chief organizer.

The giver of LOVE, encouragement and most importantly, her time.

On a personal note…

Mum was proud of my stand as a mental health advocate and author, telling everyone about my books: ME & HER: A Memoir of Madness and ME & HIM: A Guide to Recovery.

Mum inspired me to do better, reach higher and to help others.

I will NEVER forget my Mum.

She’ll stay forever in my memory and in my heart, walking beside me every day.

I’ll dedicate my next mental health book to her loving memory.

I invite you to share your thoughts and memories on Gloria or your own Mum, by leaving a comment below.

Many thanks.

She requested I share my tell-all story behind my two MAD memoirs and my recovery from parent-teacher harassment and Bipolar Disorder.

Thanks Julieanne (mother of five, Irish Author of urban fantasy novels as J.A. Lynch) spoke generously about my memoirs.

‘I recently had the privilege of reading Karen’s first book- Me & Her: A Memoir of Madness, and I was simply captivated by the sheer honesty and heart wrenching story.

I connected with Karen and her plight in more ways than one, and felt a sense of relief after I closed the book cover.
This memoir is a MUST read for anyone out there who suffers daily at the hands of mental illness. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.’

My personal disclosures on Julieanne’s website…

“My name’s Karen Tyrrell, survivor of parent-teacher abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar disorder. Parents of one of my school students inflicted psychological, written and verbal abuse until I could take no more.

Each night I screamed out with night terrors, traumatising my family.

I escaped to a lonely motel where police discovered me, incarcerating me into the frightening world of the psychiatric system. I wrote Me and Her: A Memoir of Madness to make sense of what was happening to me …
ME ─ wife, mother, writer and teacher.
HER ─ manic, psychic, healer to the living, telepathic to the dead, and SHE’s very psychotic.

In the sequel, Me and Him: A Guide to RecoveryI reveal shock discoveries casting my first memoir in a new light.

I highlight the crucial role my husband, Steve played as carer in my recovery.
What did Steve finally divulge six years on?
What impact did those revelations have on my marriage and recovery?

LOVE to know what you think! …

Can you ready to raise your awareness on mental illness AND mental health?

Have you ever been touched by mental illness in some way?

Who do you know would benefit from these self-help books?
