Healthy Mindset for SUPER Kids BOOK Giveaway

Mental health author and social worker, Stephanie Azri launches her new book, Healthy Mindset for SUPER Kids. Stephanie is currently undertaking her PhD in Social Work. She is the mother of five and a counselor, centering her work on children and families.

In 2012, Stephanie read and positively reviewed my self-help memoir of hope ME & HER: a Memoir of Madness, my recovery from parent-teacher bullying, PTSD and mental illness.

Together as educators, authors and mental health advocates, Stephanie and I support pro-active mental health initiatives in the community.

I interviewed Stephanie on HOW *Healthy Mindset for SUPER Kids* will empower children and their families.

1.    What’s your book *Healthy Mindsets for SUPER kids * about?
The book is a resilience program for children that include lesson plans, hands on activities, photo-copiable worksheets and discussions. It features superheroes to highlight each new skills taught. It’s a complete program, ideal for teachers, counsellors and parents.

2.    What’s your motivation and Inspiration to write Healthy Mindset?
I was concerned about the gaps in services available for ‘average’ children like mine, who could benefit from support but who didn’t have any major problems. I originally wrote three lessons to purely teach my own children. It took off from there!

3.    How will your book help children and families?
The program teaches children about foundation skills such as positive thinking, self-esteem, anger and stress management, and healthy relationships. This program will ensure children have learnt the skills to navigate the complex maze of life as they grow up amidst our busy lives.

4.    What’s your advice to families with children suffering from stress, anxiety or depression?
Take it seriously! Children with mental health issues will most likely become adults with mental health issues. Seek help from your school guidance officer, GP or social worker/psychologist.

5.    How can Teachers best use this book in the classroom?
Become familiar with each module and teach one at a time. The key of the program is not to force feed children with the content but to let them genuinely understand and practice each new skill.  Be flexible in your delivery and have fun!

  • Thanks Karen for your awesome support! I look forward to our continued relationship.

  • It is just so wonderful to find another mental health advocate for children! I would love to be able to share this book at all the schools I visit…I am often the first port of call for parents and teachers for up to date resource lists who are looking for ways to help educate children – I would LOVE to add this to my collection. Well done Stephanie, for helping us ‘fill the gap’ in mental health education and support for young children.

  • I love the title of the book! (I have super-hero obsessed kids right now.) 🙂

Hi Stephanie this sounds like a fantastic book. Just wish you had written it 30years ago, but it would now be good for my granddaughter as she is only 6 and gets so anxious and worried about things. Help on how to deal with that without ‘breaking’ her spirit and keeping her beautiful personality would be wonderful. Congratulations your book will go a long way.

  • Hi Nicky, Thanks for your post and I am also so pleased to meet another advocate! Feel free to join my advocate page at http://www.facebook.com/stephanieazriauthor – would love to hear from you!

  • Thanks Sam, I really appreciate your support 🙂 It is *what* makes the difference for children….

  • I am so excited and proud of this book that is well overdue. I am working in the social work field, and I know that parents and children that I am working with will benefit greatly from it. There are many valuable tools within this book and the chapter on guiding teachers was a great idea, going through with each module and teaching one at a time, allowing children to practice each new skill building their self-esteem and decreasing their own anxiety. Congrats. Stephanie for writing such a wonderful book on mental health education for families and children. I can’t wait to read your book.

  • Thanks Ani for supporting Healthy Mindsets for SUPER Kids. This book will empower kids and families. Thanks for sharing on Facebbook too … Karen 🙂

  • Fran Finucan

I would dearly love this book. We are struggling with drop off and separation and change with my eldest.

  • Thanks Ani, It’s fantastic to hear about fellow clinicians. I agree this book was overdue, and as a mother, who was so desperate for her children, who had your average teen issues, could NOT find anything that was local, affordable and useful…So this book is my legacy to my children and then all the other children and other parents in the same situation. This guide is user friendly and will be perfect for professionals, teachers and anyone caring about kids in today’s difficult world. I would love to hear from anyone who has read and used the book later down the track!

  • Thank you so much Jenny! I so agree with you!! If this book had been around 30 years ago, I would have had the support I could have used as a kid!!! Hope your granddaughter benefits from the lessons AND finds the comic book fun!!

  • Hi Fran,

  • Art Antonious

WOW!!! What a fantastic idea for parents, teachers and counsellors to use this book as powerful tool to open up discussions about mental health in our schools and at home!!! A much needed and timely release indeed. I applaud you both Stephanie Azri and Karen Tyrrell for taking a proactive mental health initiatives to help our precious young children at an early age. Congratulations for promoting the importance of early intervention with mental health of young children. I particularly like the fact that Stephanie is using super hero characters in her book “Healthy Mindset for SUPER Kids” as this will capture the attention of the kids and make learning about this rather sensitive subject fun and easy to understand. Today all the more so with the complexity and added stress in our hectic lives that parents and teachers alike need all the support and encouragement in order to continue help raise healthy and mentally resilient kids. Thank you so much Stephanie for offering all involved the opportunity to learn about life’s vital coping skills in a practical and loving way through your own personal experience as both a counsellor and a mother.

  • Thank you Art Antonious for your kind words…My husband did all the illustrations, my kids did the program with me writing and facilitating it…In a way it’s a family book 😉

  • Congratulations and thank you for bringing this book to the public. As a parent, educator and counselor, I am always looking for books that will bring proven mental health concepts to families in terms they will respond to and get excited about. I just spoke with a collegue about reslience in children, especially in times of grief and loss. I welcome the opportunity to share this resource with my collegues and the families we serve.

  • Hi Kevin, Thanks for dropping in to support Stephanie’s resilience program and book. This book will be an empowering resource for your students and your clients … Karen 🙂

  • Thank you Kevin. I appreciate what you’re saying. It is sometimes tricky to bring concepts and ‘therapy’ to families in a fun and non threatening manner. I hope you agree with me, once you’ve seen the book, that Healthy Mindsets does just that!

  • What a great concept, a program I would love to put to the test with the primary school kids I work with

  • Thanks Liz for dropping by to support Stephanie’s resilience program. I know you’ll find it helpful in your role as counselor … Karen 🙂

  • Thanks Liz! The feedbacks I received from other teachers were very positive! I hope your feedbacks will be the same!!
