How I Recovered from Mental Illness

Director of *My Health Career* website, Amanda Griffiths requested I write a guest blog disclosing how I overcame long term parent-teacher harassment, post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar disorder. Amanda wanted a real-life perspective to inspire students considering a career in health and psychology.

How did I recover from mental illness when so many are still struggling?

How did I reclaim my life?

Here’s how my psychologist and psychiatrist positively impacted on my recovery.

‘Once I, Karen Tyrrell, Brisbane school teacher was racked with screaming night terrors, psychotic mania and crippling anxiety. Parents at my school had abused and harassed me until I could take no more. I escaped, hiding out in a lonely motel.

‘Eventually Police found me, incarcerating me into the frightening world of a psychiatric hospital. How did I recover and reclaim my life?

‘A psychiatrist diagnosed me with bipolar disorder, a mood disorder, encouraging me to learn everything about my illness. When I accepted my diagnosis and a pro-active treatment plan, my journey to recovery began.

‘An alternative thinking psychologist encouraged me to trial pro-active strategies that would empower me to become well again. I literally wrote my way to wellness, reflecting on my recovery in my memoir, Me and Her: A Memoir Of Madness.

‘Daily reflective writing became the most powerful cathartic tool of all. At each therapy sitting, I scribbled down wellness plans then practiced these new techniques until the next session, noting which strategies worked for me.

‘With determination, research, and increasing self-awareness, I worked out what my mental illness triggers were and learned how to avoid them. This became the core to my wellness plan in my memoir. I now share my  ME & HER: a Memoir Of Madness and my coping tools with others struggling to keep well.
