I won!

Yes, today I won the SBS Tell us Your Story in 150 words Competition.
After battling the fear of disclosing my very personal story online, on a whim I resolved to reveal all, trusting this would lead somewhere positive.
Here’s my entry …

“After being stalked and harassed by parents at my school, my Personality began to change. I became stressed and anxious, developing acute insomnia. I feared returning to teaching but conversely I developed hypomania, feeling euphoric, speaking fast as I paced the floors.

Obsessively, I began writing my tell-all account,  Me and Her: a Memoir of Madness when I was hypomanic then continued in the grips of mania.
My memoir is about ME ─ teacher, writer, mother and my other side, HER ─ manic, psychic, healer to the living, telepathic to the dead … and I was very psychotic.
Later, on the Road to Recovery my writing became cathartic as I sought answers.

I’m recovered now and have three books under consideration by major Publishers or an Agent.
In 2010, I instigated a writer’s collective in my local community and I’m organising a Writers Festival in Logan City, Brisbane in October.”

SBS are running a writing competition on their Facebook page. Go to my Facebook profile, locate and click onto the link to my SBS Tell us Your Story and read the feedback from others in my discussion.
You may like to add a comment there too.

Early this morning I submitted my dramatic blurb and two hours later they emailed  with the News I had won.

I replied, offering SBS a chance to interview me and follow up on My Story.
Hope My Story captivates their interest and imagination and leads to new opportunities.
Fingers crossed. XX

    Hi Karen,
Congrats. What about Australian Story on the ABC? That could be another avenue also. I’ve heard they look for topical current stories also.

  • Hi Helen, Seems so surreal talking about TV opportunities when only two days I fell upon SBS’s competition by chance. Thanks for the tip, I’ll look into it. Thanks, Karen :))

  • Hello Karen,
The Australian Story idea is great. A lot of people would be interested in your story. I know I would.
Please let us know if an interview with SBS comes through. Would love to see it.

  • Hi Lexie, Seems surreal to be considering these possibilities. But who knows what will develop? If the time is right for me, these interviews will happen. Cheers, Karen :))
