FUNDED! Logan Writers Week

YAY! Logan City Council will now fund Logan Writers Week, 11th to 16th of October.
Which means I can pay for newspaper advertising, Guest speaker Doctor David Reiter of Interactive Publications, 14 Logan writers and 3 illustrators … and the other costs involved in organising a writers festival.

In April, I applied for an Arts Queensland grant with the backing of sponsors, local and state government, writing associations  and local business. Months ago, I booked timeslots for events within the library network. This year Grant applications were highly competitive with almost 100 applicants but only 33 receiving grants.

In late August, I was devastated when I received the reject letter from Arts Queensland. What am I going to do now? I felt embarrassed. What am I going to tell everybody?

But I became more determined than ever to see Logan Writers Week come to fruition. I couldn’t back out now.

Luckily Logan City Council came to my rescue. A special thanks goes to Mayor Pam Parker and Logan Councillors Lisa Bradley and Darren Powers for contributing money from  their discretionary funds.
Logan Writers Week will go ahead with all the original events, just on a tighter budget.

Thanks also to Rowena Willmott and Logan City Libraries for arranging in-house brochures and a special booklet.

Karen, Congratulations on receiving funding for Logan Writers Week. You must feel so relieved. Sleep well tonight.

  • Thanks Warwick, It was a bit touch and go for a while. I’m so glad its all going ahead :))

  • super yay! funding is always good 🙂

  • Hi Kalyan, especially when you’ve promised sponsors a newspaper ad and a Key Note speaker, wages. LOL.

  • Fabulous, Karen! 🙂 I wish I could attend and be a part of your literary successes.

  • Hi Carol, Thanks so much for saying that. I would love to meet you one day :))

Woo hoo! Fantastic! Congratulations. You’ve done a wonderful job, Karen. I hope you get some sort of award for organising all this.
Thanks for the update about the latest workshops (above). I’m already attending three events (David Reiter’s seminar, the writers’ panel, and the writers’ expo). Shall I be greedy and attend these three new events as well? I’m staying over in Morningside (or I’ll probably have moved closer to Brisbane’s CBD by then), so I’m going to make the most of it. I’ll attend these writer events plus go along to a couple of other authors’ events for Michael Gerard Bauer and his book, ‘Just a Dog’ at TLC Books, and to Angela Sunde’s Pond Magic book launch. Haven’t been to Tambourine Mountain yet.
Glad the inaugural Logan Writers Week is coming together nicely, Karen. Bye for now, and congrats again.
    Joanna :))

  • Thanks Joanna, all the hard work is now behind me. I really want to start enjoying it all coming together now as a whole. I’ve been lucky to have received the support of so many. Looks like we’ll be seeing lots of each other during that week. Thanks again for your wonderful personal support. Please be greedy with the Events!!! :))

  • Well done for not giving up Karen. I applaud you for all the work you are putting in to this venture. Best of luck with it.

  • Thanks Lynn, I’m learning so much along the way. But I’m also looking forward to some free time afterwards :))

Satori: Hi Karen, you dont know me. However, after visiting the Qld. Writers. Fest. I decided, yes, I am ready to start writing. Looking for “is there anyone out there?” I gingerly keyed in “logan writing” and my spirits were given a huge boost to discover Logan City Writers and, more importantly, what you have recently achieved! Congratulations on giving birth to what must have been a mamoth task, with so many hurdles to jump. Well done. I’m looking forward to all the workshop!

  • Thank you Brenda. I’m glad you found me. You’re name is familiar. We may have met at a writing group. Are you on Facebook? If so you can join Logan City Writers group and Logan Writers Week page. Just type in the search. Would you like me to put you on the email list for the eNewsletter? Many thanks, Karen :))
